Deciduous conifer that grows somewhat more slowly than the species does. Mature trees growing in or near water form roots that protrude above the ground like stalagmites. They can attain a width of approx. 30 cm. and a height of 1 m. The fibrous trunk is very knotty and grows very broad at the bottom. It twists in an anti-clockwise spiral. The branching pattern and young twigs grow slightly more upwards than they do in the species. Young shoots and short shoots are green. These short shoots are 5 - 10 cm long, with erect, non-spreading needles. The short shoots and needles fall off at the same time in the autumn. The difference with the species is that the needles of 'Nutans' grow more upwards and pressed up against the twig. The autumn colour is orange-brown to reddish brown. Ovoid, green cones appear after flower and turn brown when ripe. Tolerates long periods of submersion under water. Taxodium distichum 'Nutans' is particularly noticeable in the spring because of its light green emerging needles. In the autumn they turn to a warm orange-brown to reddish-brown.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2024.
Taxodium distichum 'Nutans' can eventually reach a height of 18 - 30 (50) m, depending on the site and climate conditions.
Taxodium distichum 'Nutans' is average growing and can eventually reach a height of 18 - 30 (50) m, depending on the site and climate conditions.
The leaves of Taxodium distichum 'Nutans' turn orange, red in autumn.
The right time to plant Taxodium distichum 'Nutans' is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Taxodium distichum 'Nutans' with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
