Royal Family Members Who Are Already Setting 2023 Style Trends
Outfits fit for a princess.
It seems as if the royal family has been setting fashion trends since the beginning of time. From Princess Di's timeless sweatshirt-biker-short combos to Meghan Markle's classic white blouse ensembles and Princess Kate's tailored dresses, Britain's royalty has always provided excellent style inspiration. It's no surprise then that the House of Windsor is already embracing and creating some of the year's biggest fashion trends. From colorful leather trenches to statement headbands, we rounded up some of our favorites so far.
Cobalt Blue
Kate Middleton embraced one of the season's hottest colors, cobalt blue, while attending Easter service at Windsor Castle this year. Here, she's pictured donning a vibrant blue coat by London fashion designer Catherine Walker paired with a matching pillbox hat.
Monochrome Dressing
Middleton also mastered monochrome dressing that day when she paired her coat with a matching blue dress and clutch.
Off-the-Shoulder Dresses
Meghan Markle put her own spin on the popular off-the-shoulder trend by wearing a white off-the-shoulder dress with a tailored silhouette to a gala in New York City.
Tailored Blazers
Tailored blazers are one fashion trend we can definitely get behind. And it looks like Middleton can, too. In March, she was photographed wearing a sleek cream blazer by Alexander McQueen.
Shades of Green
Greens of all shades have been popping up more and more in recent years (remember when slime green first came onto the scene?). Middleton created her version of this trend on St. Patrick's Day by pairing a seafoam green coat with a matching pillbox hat. The color was perfect for the occasion.
Embroidered Prints
Middleton attended the 2023 Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey wearing a delicately-embroidered floral two-piece set. Embroidered dresses, tops, and other garments have gained popularity in recent years, and we're sure we'll see more people copying the Duchess's gorgeous spring look soon.
Cream Tones
You can't go wrong with cream. Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, attended the same event dressed in creamy hues. Neutral shades, such as beiges, creams, whites, and grays, have been appearing everywhere lately.
Printed Dresses
Princess Eugenie opted to wear a beautiful floral print dress to this year's Easter Sunday festivities. Dresses of all patterns and prints have become especially popular, with designers like Diane von Furstenberg including them in their ready-to-wear collections.
Fringed Coats
Princess Eugenie also helped jump-start the fringed coat craze in late 2022. These sophisticated jackets, which are a little unexpected, dominated this past winter and continue to be a favorite of trendsetters everywhere. Eugenie’s Weekend MaxMara version is incredibly chic.
Statement Headbands
If you want to add a bit of excitement to any outfit, throw on a thick velvet headband. This velvet Jane Taylor London one, worn by Lady Louise Windsor, is statement-making yet sophisticated.
Loafers
Isla Phillips, great-granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, was already ahead of the trend curve last Christmas when she wore a pair of black leather loafers to celebrate. Loafers of all styles and heights are everywhere now.
Ankle-Length Coats
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, wore a beige ankle-length coat while stepping out on Christmas morning this past year. Short coats and bomber jackets are now making way for more luxurious options that graze the floor or just above it.
A Pop of Pink
We're seeing pink everywhere ahead of the upcoming Barbie movie, including on Zara Tindall, the daughter of Princess Anne. For Easter, she decided on a hot pink dress paired with light-colored pumps.
Tortoiseshell Details
Tindall was photographed wearing a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses during the Cheltenham Festival. Tortoiseshell is another of-the-moment fashion trend that we’ll see more of in eyewear, hair clips, and accessory detailing.
Pinstripe Suiting
Expect to see more pinstripe suits, like this one worn by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, in the coming months. Both sleek and easy to style, pantsuits add an upscale yet laid-back vibe to any outfit.
Colorful Leather
Move over traditional black leather coats—more colorful versions, like this deep pink one Ferguson wore during a recent outing in Los Angeles, are set to take over. Dressed with matching pants and tops or worn as a statement piece, colorful leather jackets really set the mood.
