Buergbrennen

The old Luxembourgish tradition of Buergsonnden has long marked the end of winter. Wood, hay and other flammable materials are gathered to light the Buerg (from the Latin word "comburere" meaning "to burn"), which is supposed to put an end to the cold season and herald in the spring. The event is now accompanied by a neighbourhood party with hot drinks and grilled food. The lighting of the Buerg is generally preceded by a torch procession, the Fakelzuch.

Buergbrennen is celebrated throughout the city on the Saturday or Sunday after Carnival Sunday.
