Firewire

Firewire Surfboards originally started in 1981 as NEV Surfboards in Western Australia, by renowned shaper Neville Hyman. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1958, Neville Charles Hyman grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and started surfing at the age 9, venturing into board shaping only four years later in his father’s garage-workshop. In 1975, he co-founded Odyssey Surfboards in Perth and later established his own Nev Surfboards label in 1980, rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the world’s sought-after board-makers. Over the years, Hyman crafted boards for numerous acclaimed surfers including Kelly Slater, Wendy Botha, and Mark Occhilupo.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hyman played a pivotal role in the development of computer-driven shaping technologies, both in hardware and software. This occurred during a time when machine-made surfboards were seen as contradictory to the traditional building of hand shaped surfboards. However, Hyman’s vision of shaping boards through computer programs and machine manufacturing eventually became the new industry standard.

Towards the end of 2005, Hyman sought to modernize surfboard materials and collaborated with innovative shaper Bert Burger in Western Australia. Their partnership led to the creation of Firewire Surfboards, using a novel “sandwich” construction involving EPS foam, balsa, and epoxy resin. Eventually, in 2015, 11-time world champion Kelly Slater invested into Firewire, further cementing the company’s significance in the surfing industry. Most recently, Hyman was inducted to the International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame.

Firewire revolutionized surfboard construction with a commitment to sustainability and was the first to introduce 100% EPS/Epoxy construction. Collaborating with experienced shapers like Daniel “Tomo” Thompson, Dan Mann, Kelly Slater, and Rob Machado, Firewire is dedicated to enhancing the surfing experience through sustainable innovation. With an extensive range of models, their eco-conscious approach reduces harm to the environment and offers unique durability. Headquartered in Carlsbad, California, Firewire operates globally and specializes in shortboards, mid lengths, longboards, accessories, and more. The company’s CEO, Mark Price, leads their commitment to sustainability, striving for an environmentally responsible future.
