Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’
SPICY OLD SWEET PEA

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ has the most delicious, sweetest, spiciest, and most powerful scent, of all Sweet Peas.

Delicious, sweetest & strongest scent of all Sweet Peas

‘Matucana’ has an intoxicating and irresistible perfume – you just cant get enough of it.
Making it the most beloved of all the old fashioned climbing Sweet Peas, with heritage status.
Because no modern Sweet Pea can touch it for perfume.

Heritage plant

So ensuring that it always has been, and always will be, grown and loved.
Despite that fact the the flowers are smaller than modern hybrids, the stems shorter, and it only comes in a set colour scheme.
But no-one can be without that perfume.

Striking rich violet & deep crimson bi-colour

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ also has rich and exotic colouring to match the perfume.
Each bloom is half violet and half deep crimson, and 4 blooms are usually borne per stem.

Wonderful cut flowers for perfume & colour

‘Matucuna’ provides lovely blooms for a vase, even though the stems are not as long as the stems of modern hot-house Sweet Pea varieties, and the flowers smaller.
But what it lacks in size it makes up for in huge scent, charm, and hardy growth.

Hardy low climber

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ is just the right size climber for any garden, even in a small space.
So plant this hardy climber in Full Sun to Part Shade, on a trellis, fence, or climbing through a supporting shrub.
It is more heat and sun hardy than modern varieties and blooms for longer too.
‘Matucana’ enjoys soil with plenty of organic matter and feed, and it really appreciates mulch in the summer.

Self twining & perfect in a pot

‘Matucana’ is self-twining, attaching itself to the support or host, scrambling up to about 1.5 – 1.8m. high all by itself. It does not smother the host.
And it is also perfect for growing in a container on a tripod.

Extended season of blooming

‘Matucana’ is very productive, and has an extended blooming period due to it’s greater tolerance to summer heat.

“Cut & Come Again” flower

So the more flowers you cut, the more it produces for even longer.

Quickly raised from seed & easily grown

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ is easily raised from seed and grown on to flowering size quickly.
It is easy to gather pea pods of seeds for next year, or you can just let them drop so it sows it’s own crop for next year. The seeds are quick and easy germinators.

Annual climber 1.5 – 1.8m. High approx. x 30cm. Wide. Self twining.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Can be sown outdoors direct in the garden in autumn, winter or early spring / or sown indoors in a punnet at any time.

Indoors & outdoors: First soak the pea seeds in warm (not boiling) water and allow to cool overnight.
Then Pea seeds that are ready to sow will have sunk to the bottom by morning. While any that are not yet ready will be floating.
Should you have any floating seeds – then roughen the hard coat by gently rubbing the seeds between 2 sheets of fine sandpaper, or rubbing between your hands with some grit or sand. Then re-soak overnight again.

Then plant pea seeds 2.5cm. deep. individually in little pots. Deeper pots or tubes are best, as the peas soon develop a long tap root.

Temperatures of 18-20C. are best for rapid and optimum germination.

Seeds germinate in approx. 14 days. at optimum temperature.

Seed Count: 40 seeds per pack approx.
We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
