Leather ground beetle (Carabus coriaceus)
(at least, that's the literal translation from the German common name, “Lederlaufkäfer”)
The reason why this beetle is covered with so many particles is because it was hiding under a piece of bark on a fallen, decomposing tree. After I took this picture, we restored the cover again…
Carabus coriaceus is a species of beetle widespread in Europe, where it is primarily found in deciduous forests and mixed forests.
