Coulson (Clark Gregg) is about to meet his match.
Agent Gonzales (Edward James Olmos) is closing in on the SHIELD director, whom he views as dangerous because of his fascination with alien tech, which led to disaster in last year’s midseason finale. Last week’s Agents of SHIELD revealed that Gonzales has been working behind the scenes, running an alternate version of SHIELD, and even enlisting Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) and Mack (Henry Simmons) to infiltrate Coulson’s operation as double agents.

“Things are going to be more complex than they were before Coulson had to deal with Gonzales. Much more,” Olmos tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It makes for a better show. You put any character into this kind of dilemma, and you’ve got better writing. You’ve got better everything.”
Olmos, who earned major fanboy cred for work in Blade Runner and as Admiral William Adama on SyFy’s much-loved Battlestar Galactica, acknowledges it will be difficult for the Comic-Con crowd to know whom to root for in the struggle ahead.
“It gets to be really, really, difficult. Especially if you are a Coulson fan,” Olmos says.
The he upcoming episodes will reveal more of Gonzales’ backstory and what motivates him, a well as a few “mind-blowing” twists Olmos is remaining tightlipped about.

Agents of SHIELD marks Olmos’ largest TV role since his season-long arc on Showtime’s Dexter in 2011. The actor, who has been a Marvel fan for decades, says he respects Agents of SHIELD for “being so inclusive and so diverse” in its casting.
“I kind of tell Stan [Lee] what to do,” jokes Olmos of the creation of Gonzales, who does not appear in the comics. “We go back a long way, and I said ‘You gotta bring in Gonzales. You need some diversity here.’ ”
Olmos adds that just as last summer’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier set up Agents of SHIELD season two when it destroyed SHIELD, Olmos teases a strong connection between his run on the series and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.
“When you see Ultron, you’ll start to realize how well this show is connected,” Olmos says.
Agents of SHIELD airs at 9 p.m. on ABC.
