Neoraimondia herzogiana cactus
  • Neoraimondia herzogiana (Backeb.) Buxb. & Krainz is a large columnar variety of cactus which branch into the shape of a candelabra. The stems are well defined, greyish-green in colour and have 6-7 ribs with cream coloured areoles housing 3-5 stout central spines, 6-10cm long and 7-10 radial ones which are1-2cm long. Also known as the Baseball Bat Cactus it has the longest spines known to exist among any cacti. Pinkish -white flowers between are funnel shaped and around 5-6cm in diameter and 6-7cm long. These are followed by edible fruit.

     

    The genus is named after the Italian-born Peruvian explorer, naturalist, and scientist, Antonio Raimondi.
