The Polish-born artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis took on music to painting.  Through the activities of his father as an organist he came into early contact with keyboard instruments and studied piano and composition in the episode at the Music Academy in Warsaw and later in Leipzig.  In 1902 he attended a painting school in Warsaw, but did so without abandoning his musical passion.

His paintings were a kind of synthesis of the music, as they were compositionally based on musical structures and often the titles were borrowed music terminology such as "Fugue" or "Allegro".  Ciurlionis liked to call himself as Synthesist.
