The Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus), renowned for its vibrant colors and distinctive markings, is a captivating addition to marine aquariums. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species, also known as the Clown Surgeonfish, brings both beauty and personality to your aquarium. We reccomend clown tangs for advanced hobbiests with larger aquariums as they require lots of room for swimming.

1. Aquarium Setup: The Clown Tang thrives in spacious aquariums with a minimum size of 125 gallons (small sized fish), providing ample space for swimming and exploration. Incorporate plenty of rock formations and open spaces to mimic its natural habitat. A strong water flow and efficient filtration are crucial, as these fish prefer well-oxygenated and pristine water conditions.

2. Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature ranging from 72-78°F (22-26°C), a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Regular water testing and adjustments are essential to ensure the optimal health and well-being of the Clown Tang.

3. Diet: Clown Tangs are herbivores with a preference for a varied and algae-rich diet. Provide high-quality marine pellets, algae sheets (nori), and offer a mix of fresh vegetables like spinach, seaweed, and lettuce. It is important to supplement their diet with occasional offerings of frozen mysis shrimp or brine shrimp or refrigerated meaty foods from Dr. G's and LRS Herbivore blend. Regular, small feedings throughout the day contribute to their overall health.

4. Compatibility: While Clown Tangs are generally peaceful, they may exhibit territorial behavior towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish. Introduce them into a well-established aquarium with other non-aggressive tankmates. Suitable companions include peaceful species such as wrasses, gobies, and smaller reef-safe fish. Avoid housing them with aggressive or territorial tankmates to prevent potential conflicts.

5. Reef Safety: The Clown Tang is considered reef safe, making it compatible with reef aquariums. These fish do not pose a threat to corals or invertebrates and can coexist peacefully in a reef setting. However, it's essential to provide adequate hiding spots and spaces for these fish to establish territories, as this can help reduce stress and aggression.

6. Disease Prevention: Maintaining excellent water quality is paramount for the health of Clown Tangs. Regular observation, a proper diet, and a stress-free environment contribute to disease prevention. Quarantine new additions before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the spread of potential pathogens. We quarantine our fish and use UV sterilizers on our fish and coral tanks and we find this very beneficial.

The Clown Tang is a splendid addition to fish only and reef aquariums, combining captivating beauty with an interesting personality.
