The Jerusalem Gift Shop presents Biblical oil lamps
The Glow of Herodian oil Lamps reveals the secrets of the Torah scribe
Crafting Biblical Clay Oil Lamps: A Warm, Earthy Light Guiding Us on a Journey Back to Ancient Times
Creating biblical clay oil lamps is more than a craft; it's a journey back in time, allowing us to physically connect with our ancient ancestors. These simple, functional objects, with their warm, earthy glow, were central to life during biblical times. As stated in Psalm 119:105, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Just as God's word guided the people, Crafting these lamps today is an act of participation in this age-old tradition, a hands-on approach to understanding human history and our basic need for light. We use the same simple materials – earth, linen, oil – and in the process, we create something that transcends time and geography. The Gospel of Matthew shares a similar sentiment about the significance of light, saying, "You are the light of the world.
A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house." (Matthew 5:14-15).
Gift from The Jerusalem Gift Shop A Glimmer from the Past: An Oil Lamp, Lighting the Path to History and Heritage
Looking for a special gift? Try a biblical oil lamp. These aren't just regular lamps, but a piece of history. They take us back to a time when a simple flame was a symbol of home, comfort, and togetherness. An oil lamp is more than a cool decoration. It's a bridge to the past, sparking conversations and curiosity about how people used to live. It's a great gift for anyone - whether they're moving into a new house, celebrating a birthday, or just love history. So, when you gift an oil lamp, you're giving more than just light. You're sharing a piece of the past,
a reminder of our shared roots, and a beacon of warmth and unity. In the Bible, it is said, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." (1 Peter 4:10)

In the Warm Light of Herodian Oil Lamps: Discovering the Everyday Secrets of Old-Time Torah Scribes."The crafting of ancient manuscripts was a painstaking and time-consuming process. This work could not be done in just any lighting conditions. In order to write with precision and accuracy, the scribes needed a steady and consistent source of light. This is where the oil lamps come in. The use of oil lamps in the writing of these ancient texts was not without its challenges. The lamps had to be carefully tended and refilled, and the soot from the burning oil could sometimes smudge the ink on the parchment. But despite these difficulties, the scribes persisted, producing some of the most beautiful and enduring texts of the ancient world. Today, Herodian oil lamps are highly prized by collectors and scholars. They offer valuable insights into the material culture and religious practices of the people who lived in the Holy Land during the time of Jesus. |

Under the Herodian Lamps' Warm Glow: Reverence and Reflection Inspired by the Last SupperImagine the scene: a room bathed in the warm, soft glow of Herodian oil lamps, an air of reverence permeating the space. It's not the Last Supper, but the atmosphere certainly draws inspiration from that sacred moment. In the Book of John, Jesus shares a meal with his disciples and offers words that inspire reflection, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (John 13:34). This scripture resonates within the warm glow of the Herodian lamps, inspiring us to reflect on our own relationships and the love we share with others. The oil lamps, reminiscent of those from the Herodian era, serve as a tangible connection to the past, a reminder of the enduring message of the Last Supper. As the lamps continue to burn, we are reminded of the words in Psalm 119:105, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Guided by the warm glow of these Herodian lamps, we find ourselves reflecting, connecting, and journeying through history, |

The lamp absorbs through to the clay and when the Wick is lit, the entire lamp catches fire. It leaks oil and sits in a puddle of oil.

There is an bare spot on the bottom and a small bit inside you can take note of.
These spots effect absolutely nothing. At least I've not noticed any problems.
As with any lamp it's best to put it on a small dish to catch any leakage. It does not leak much and is perfectly normal. To not opt out of this product just because you're worried about leaks. It's fine!
DO NOT USE STANDARD LAMP OIL LIKE KEROSENE ON CLAY LAMPS!
That is unless you want it to turn into a little campfire.
It's also very durable!
While I was away one of my cats knocked it off a fairly high table. Abt 3-4 feet.
On its way down it hit the wooden arm of a chair then smacked onto some thin carpet.
I was absolutely terrified!
Then to my relief there wasn't any damage to it.
Or at the very least none I could notice or have noticed since.
On another note, this us just my personal preference but I really like the odd imperfections that come from handmade products such as this.
The slightly off handle, the bald spot on the inside, and the tiny pebble that juts out slightly on the right side that I've decided to name Henry.
These little imperfections make feel feel closer to the work. It's a reminder it was made by another human being. Call it the mark of the maker if you will.
It's not perfect and that's exactly what makes it perfect.
My only complaint is the wick it comes with.
I don't know why it's waxed. It makes it very difficult to wet and is so thin it falls in and goes out when it gets low.
Which I guess one could say is a safety feature.
What I did is I decided to make my own wicks out if 100% cotton thread.
There are 2 ways I like to use and I'll describe them here.
For 1 thread take the thread and fold it in half.
Then start twisting it ALOT and if it start to twist into itself pull it apart. Do not undo your twists!
Fold the twisted thread onto itself and let it twist into itself now and tie it on the end.
Feel free to do another twist and fold before you tie it until you have your desired thickness.
For two strings like the one in my picture take 2 threads and put them on top of each other and twist them. Unlike with 1 thread we don't fold before the first twisting.
When you have it we'll twisted it let it twist into itself then you can choose to either tie it off or twist it again if you want it thicker.
The ones you see in the image are thick!
If you found my explanation unhelpful there are YouTube videos that you can find.
I am not responsible for any wick related injuries!
I feel like that needs to be said.
