Product Description

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were the most famous criminal couple in US history. In reality, as this film reveals, Bonnie and Clyde grew up in the slums of West Dallas and had little in common with their glamorous media images.

Well done documentary including a lot of chronological detail and valuable media. The 1934 black and white video someone shot moments after the fatal law enforcement shooting in Louisiana was amazing. The pictures of Buck on his death bed, and Blanche in police custody speak volumes. The scenes at the Dallas funeral services are also amazing. This documentary is quite a bit superior to the Hollywood films about the duo. The interviewees are good. They seem to keep a mostly balanced tone, not portraying the duo as victims, but neither portraying them as monsters. Bonnie and Clyde were playing a dangerous game that would never end well for them. It's eerie that everyone knew their death was imminent, including them.

Sometimes I see a five star rating and wonder concerning the qualification of the person who gave the rating. When it comes to popular history I just personally like to get more information than what I had access to before. This documentary did that for me, so I was pleased for that reason. Obviously there is always more to a story than a film or documentary will focus on. Back during my high school years in east Texas I saw the Hollywood movie with Fay Dunaway. That would have been about 34 years after the actual events. As a more seasoned adult, I can easily remember back far longer than 34 years. My high school drama teacher back in 1968, who was likely born right about the time of these events, and whose parents likely had a much better feel of the popular perception during the period of Bonnie and Clyde's infamy, had a far less romantic impression of Bonnie and Clyde than the Hollywood movie painted.

Thus after seeing my teacher's disgust, my curiosity was piqued, and I read a book, but that too did a bit of romanticizing. This documentary filled in some gaps. As horrific as some of the pictures in the documentary were, I remember seeing far more horrific pictures in a book I read at a public library when I was in Southern California back during the summer of 1970. Those photographs in that book made it very clear Bonnie and Clyde were were shot dead! This may well have been in keeping with popular sentiment at the time.

This documentary was more in-depth with more photographs and footage than others I'd seen before. The duo remain mysterious to me, even now, especially Bonnie. I can understand her falling in love with a career criminal, but the reasoning behind her joining him on and participating in his exploits escapes me. I understand she was bored. But she was also intelligent and a good writer who could have furthered her education, pursued writing, and led a longer, more fulfilling life. On the other hand, she was also clearly somewhat wild and lacked direction, I do not understand why she chose to jeapordize everything over a man. Perhaps there was an emptiness inside that she believed only Clyde (or romantic love) could fill.

Another reviewer said his North Texan ancestors sat up at night standing guard with shotguns when it was believed Bonnie and Clyde were in the area. Folks were more frightened than proud of them, apparently, the whole "Robin Hood" image being largely a myth. You don't hear stories of locals hiding or aiding them. It appears they were quite on their own.

This documentary is well worth watching.

Well documented with photos and footage, the short crime spree of Bonnie and Clyde plays out in this film. I appreciated the quality of this documentary over others I have seen. In my opinion the were low life criminals and murderers but always portrayed glamorous in love. The wayward souls who were herded into no other fate than what they lived and ultimately received. A unique piece of Americana.

I expect high quality programs from PBS, and I wasn't disappointed. The video was informative and engaging without being salacious. I appreciate that it established the historic context to explain how criminals like Bonnie and Clyde could not only exist and thrive, but even rise to a nearly celebrity status. It was interesting to see that the biggest difference between the media coverage then versus now is the speed at which it was delivered. It was more interesting to realize that there is no difference at all in the public's insatiable appetite for it. In a sense, Bonnie and Clyde were the precursors of, and prototypes for, that portion of reality television that celebrates bad behavior.

I watched this American Experience documentary a couple of times before I bought the DVD. It is a good one. The Bonnie & Clyde movie was okay but not one I'd watch repeatedly. On the other hand, this documentary is so much more interesting and detailed, and what really got me is how young these folks were - only in their early twenties! They died the way they chose to live so I don't have any sympathy for their brief lifespan. It's entertaining but also has a message that crime doesn't pay.

It was an in depth look at these 2 unlucky kids that chose the dark side and the eventual result. My father grew up in north Texas. He told me that the myth that they were considered Robin Hoods was wrong.
He said that his dad and older brothers took turns sitting up at night with a shotgun when they were in the area.
