HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Dozens of dogs rescued from a puppy mill are making the nearly 600-mile trip to northern Michigan, with the hope of finding a new home.

The Little Traverse Bay Human Society agreed to help after an investigation in Iowa led to the discovery of more than 130 dogs.

The humane society will be taking on 60 dogs who are being delivered in two separate trips.

On Thursday night, 47 dogs will be arriving at the humane society.

The dogs are of various breeds, including Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain dogs and Poodles.

Sarah Schertel, the director of operations at the human society, is reaching out to the community to help with the transition.

"We could really use a lot of help right now," Schertel said. "Fostering is incredible, volunteering, is incredible."

"If you’re in a position where you can donate anything at this point, like I said, we’re going to need a lot of cleaning supplies and a lot of dog food," Schertel said.

Schertel said they will also be working with several other Bissell Pet Foundation-affiliated animal shelters in Michigan to help care for the dogs.
