The history behind the wrap trousers!

Wrap trousers are more traditionally and world widely known as Thai Wrap Pants and are an adaptation of the more heard of Thai Fisherman's pants. Fisherman's pants were invented by the Thai people, and were worn mostly by fishermen, and fishermen's families. Fisherman's pants are worn as both casual wear or as work wear. They are among the most traditional pants worn in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. They are named after the Thai fishermen who wore them, although locals in other parts of the region may also wear them. They are made from a type of cotton or lightweight linen that is easy to care for, sturdy, comfortable to wear, and resistant to water. They are often combined with traditional accessories such as boat shoes. The fisherman in Thailand wore these trousers because they are loose fitting, easy to move around in and breathable so every hard working fisherman could work in comfort!

They were (although unisex) much more widely worn by men however this amazing, innovatively designed adaptation referred to as (and I have checked this with my suppliers) 'wrap pants' are a much more unisex friendly option, and more frequently worn by women due to their beautiful side split where the material wraps around your legs. I have also had another supplier refer to them as butterfly pants, which I think is beautiful!

Thai wrap pants have increased in popularity over the years, peaking in the 80's and 90s, and have become a popular garment all over the world with increasing popularity in and all over Europe, Australia and Africa.

I hope to expand my knowledge of the history behind these trousers, and share with you all the information behind these fantastic garments that I am very proud to be selling.

I offer from more traditional Thai patterned trousers, to a more westernised mesh version great for holidays and festivals - I cannot wait to expand my stock and try out lots of different designs as well as adapt this idea of adjustable, wrap around fashion into skirts, shorts and much more.
