Jameson’s Red Rock Hare

(Pronolagus randensis)

The Red Rock Hare is a rabbit that lives in the mountainous habitats of southern Africa. I photographed this little guy hopping around the stony hills next to the Outpost Lodge in northern Kruger National Park (watch our video review here).

The species was named after the Irish zoologist who identified it in 1907, Henry Lyster Jameson. After attending school in Dublin he eventually wound up in South Africa. As far as I know, he is not directly related to John Jameson who founded Jameson Irish Whiskey one hundred years earlier in Dublin. This is just my roundabout way of saying, “Happy Saint Patrick’s Day everyone!”
