Katsushika HOKUSAI - Hokusai Manga

Ehon/Book Vol. 3 of 15 vols. First published in 1815 (our copy a slightly later print, ca. 1820). Contains 56 full-page woodcuts in 3 colors (light pink, light and dark grey) and 4 pages woodcut text in kanji and hiragana. Original cardboard covers in dark red with label. Japanese four hole binding.
Ex collection Walter Exner who's father Anton (1882-1952) donated a major part of his outstanding Japanese woodcut collection to the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna.

The woodcuts depict such different things as scenes from Japanese rural life (rice industry), sumo wrestlers, dance figures (see image above), plants, animals both real and mythological, warriors, demons, land- and seascapes, people representing different professions and last but not least a rare example of a sketch explaining European central perspective, proving that despite the fact that it was hardly ever used in Japanese art it nevertheless was known to the educated.
