The figs appear to be slightly unripe and may even contain fig wasps.
Animals that can eat unripe figs such as langurs and orangutans have a competitive advantage over the many animals that can only eat ripe figs such as gibbons and bulbuls, as the ability to eat figs before they ripen gives them first choice of the crop.

The White -Crowned Hornbill Aceros comatus is the rarest hornbill in Borneo normally found in dense riverine forest. This hornbill is also the most carnivorous hornbill and is only rarely seen to eat figs.
