Found from Costa Rica to Panama at elevations of 100 to 1350 meters as a hot to warm growing epiphyte with basally subterete and fusiform above the lower 1/4, stipitate basally psueobulb enveloped in youth by scarious bracts and carrying 2, apical, subcoriaceous, linear-lanceolate, carinate below, emarginate and apiculate, conduplicate basally leaf that blooms in the spring through fall on a terminal, short, pendant, racemose, successively 1 to 3 flowered inflorescence.
Very similar to S clavata but differs in the larger flowers with larger fatter tepals, with a wider lip with a wide almost squarish, basal depression with a very high ridge margin that is folded back towards the lip margin.
